AP: “The nearly 13,000 Virginia felons whose voting rights were restored, stripped, then restored again are more likely to live in areas that voted for Democrats than Republicans. Data from the Virginia Public Access Project showed that nearly one-third of the felons with restored voting rights live in a precinct where President Barack Obama received more than 75 percent of the vote in 2012.”

WSJ, May 27: “Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s move to restore voting rights to 206,000 felons triggered a high-stakes legal and political battle in the swing state, where Republican leaders claim the Democratic governor’s move was unconstitutional.”

The GOP had no problem with him restoring individual rights. “The governor “may not issue a blanket restoration,” the Republicans said in their petition to the court, which Mr. McAuliffe is contesting. Four other Virginians joined them as petitioners.”

Gov McAuliffe (D/VA), April: “Well I would tell the republicans quit complaining and go out and earn these folks right to vote for you. Go out and talk to them. I think some of the language that has come out of the republicans, I would tell them to be very careful at how they frame this, very careful of their rhetoric.”
