CRIST: IF YOU CAN’T BEAT’EM, RUN AGAINST’EM
Late this afternoon it was leaked that FL Gov Crist will be turning in his GOP resignation papers tomorrow and registering as an independent. Trailing Rubio (a Tea Party endorsed GOP candidate) by more points than he could possible cover, Crist is hedging his bet by playing the three party odds.
Quninipiac’s poll shows Crist at 32% as an independent, Rubio at 30%, and the dem’s Meek at 24%. The dems are excited at the new life this change brings to Meek’s campaign.
Crist’s campaign funds starting drying up when he first mentioned the possibility of the switch. Donors have openly stated that they would demand refunds of their contributions if he did. A former GOP state chairmen said: “I don’t know any who will continue to support him if he leaves the party.”
Consider Specter’s departure, a once GOP member left never again to have the backing of his former party. And Lieberman, who jumped ship as well, has fought off an election against the progressives.
Who will Crist hang with, which party will support him let alone from which party will he draw voters? How will he situate himself in the event of a win? The voters did not buy into his platform as a GOP primary campaign runner, in separating, how does he refocus?
